Adapting and Advancing

Ramas Vivas

Surprising Times

Like the rest of the world, the corona virus and all of its ripples caught us by surprise.  Though our weekly ministry has changed shape, we continue to advance with the following goals:

  1. Grow in unity as a team
  2. Care for our people
  3. Disciple our team members
  4. Contribute in positive ways to our community in the middle of this crisis.
When this is over, we will not go back to normal.  We are striving for better than normal.  With God's help, we will continue to get stronger, grow in unity and learn things that will help us serve children and families in our community even more effectively.
Here in the Dominican Republic, there have now been an 7288 confirmed cases of COVID-19, though only 67, 12 and 5 cases have been confirmed in the three provinces where our team lives and works, San Pedro, Hato Mayor and El Seibo, respectively.

All schools and most businesses are closed.  Over Easter, travel between provinces was prohibited, and there is a 5pm curfew every day.  The police go out every day at 5pm.  We hear the sirens and pay attention.  They do arrest and fine people who violate the 5pm curfew.

What We Can Do

In a time when our routines are turned upside down and many of our choices have been taken away, we start by focusing on what we can control.

As a team, we've learned how to do leadership meetings by zoom and Bible studies over the phone when internet and electricity is limited.

We continue to make the effort to care for all members of our team through phone calls, special messages and extra food/financial gifts during this hard time.

We work with families who struggled financially before COVID-19.
Now, going to work is not even an option for their parents who counted on that daily income to put food on the table.  The needs are overwhelming.

This week a small team of Ramas Vivas leaders went to Km 16 to share a big bag of grocieries with families living there.

They smiled from ear-to-ear and expressed a deep and genuine gratitude for the gift.

Thank you for your continued partnership in this ministry.  Your investments continue to impact lives here in the Dominican Republic.

Ramas Vivas or Living Branches

I am the vine; you are the branches.  If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”  ~ John 15:5

Our Ramas Vivas Leadership Team asked me to be sure to let each of you know that here, in the Dominican Reublic, we are also praying for you and your families.   You who invest, visit, encourage and support this ministry are an extension of our team, and we care about you, too.  We pray that God's perfect peace, protection, provision and wisdom surround you and guide you today and always.

Before the Virus

We were able to do one of our eight scheduled family events in Prudencio last month before COVID-19.

Parents and children competed against other families in some freindly games.  There was a lot of laughter, singing, a snack and encouraging words for parents and children.

Our first mission team from Westbridge Church in St. Michael was here at the end of March/beginning of April, just as COVID-19 was growing into a world-wide pandemic.

We are so grateful for their partnership.  They preached, they tiled the church, and were instrumental in helping us clearly develop our Launch Plan for the water project.

Water Project

Construction was delayed for just over a month, but a small team has begun working again this week.  They put in all of the columns for the builidng.  It's really nice to see progress again!

They will work on the ceiling next.  After the ceiling is up, they will lay the block for the exterior walls.

Though progressed slowed on the construction of the building, we have not stopped working behind the scenes on our launch plan, the legalization process, research and support raising.

We still need to raise around $20k for a generator, inverter, air conditioners, 2 motorcycles with trailers and a few other start-up costs.
