Atlantic Bridge ::
I am writing this from the road as I travel around the Czech Republic and Germany. We started in one town in former East Germany, then we visit several cities in CZ, and end in Nurnberg, Germany. Of course there is much driving, but all five in the team, including the two interns, can drive the car so we we able to take turns.It is great for me to be able to visit and get reacquainted with some of the AB volunteers again after several years. And it is good to meet Czech and German students. On several different days we attend four or five classes. The most we have is nine in one day (at two schools across from each other); we split into two teams for that day.
We can gather some feedback on the road, and we seem to have made a good impact in many of the classrooms with our interactive, cross-cultural presentation. Most of the teachers are very happy -- several of these, and most of our contacts on the ground are Christians and valued the opportunity for us to make a bridge into the schools that they could carry on with. Much time is spent with our local volunteers in each region as we try to listen to them, build them up, encourage them and make plans with them.
Time on the road means ample opportunities to get to know my fellow travellers, and I am having many good chats with the interns; we got to visit with the families of our two interns, on Czech Republic and one in Germany.
I especially enjoy getting to know Bruce Kuhn, whom I had briefly worked with many years ago while I was with IFES in UK. He and I have many things in common: he is from USA, has a creative Dutch wife, has lived here for some years (many more than I), has children of similar ages, lives in Zeeland (about 45 minutes from us), has similar involvement in ministries as both a volunteer and tentmaker.
Of course, there were some cultural highlights and experiences. One morning while staying with Lenka, our friend in CZ, I got to visit the farm of her inlaws where I helped catch, kill and clean several ducks. We had a lovely duck dinner.
On another, more sobering occasion we visited the memorial and museum at the Nazi workcamp in the old fortress at Terezin through which several thousands of inmates were redirected to the death camps, and at which hundreds or thousands died from mistreatment and disease.

My new team of three may be close to getting its first project. We are hoping to get commissioned to build a networked and/or online system for a school in UAE which would keep track of their students, courses and grades. We have worked throught the requirements, made a plan and put a proposal together.Our special Computer Fund Project is set up to cover our need of a new ministry computer. If you would like to participate with us and give toward this need, you can use the giving form on IGO's Giving Page (which is processed safely through IGO's PayPal account). Then choose "SV Computer Need" from gift allocation choices. Thank you!
