MIST Report for February 2012

Family

Neil was on a trip to Uganda from December 30 to January 26, and was thus not in close touch with what was going on at home with the family. Here are some of the things that happened in January.

School started up again for John, Eric (both in college and should be graduating this spring), Karen and Esther (both taking college classes for high school and college credit). Neil (III) began teaching music (band) in some of the local public schools again after the Christmas break. Esther played in a competition for high school students who play orchestral instruments and was a finalist. The finals were held before a concert in the hall where the professional orchestra plays. She didn’t win, but she was awarded $500. She also auditioned on clarinet to be accepted as a music major at the local university. Karen submitted an audition CD for a national competition by National Public Radio and was chosen to be recorded professionally and to play at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and was awarded a scholarship to advance her music career and education. The performance will be near the end of March. She is also auditioning at three music schools in Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Indiana in the next couple of months.

Eric has been seeking an internship to complete the requirements for his business degree, and has had several interview with one company, but they haven’t gotten back to him yet.

Some of us were sick this month, including Neil and Jeannette. Neil came down with a cold after he returned from Uganda and Jeannette got sick a few days later. We are still not over the cold, but it usually takes about two weeks to get over a cold.

Work

The majority of the work that Neil did this month was in Uganda where he helped with a Luke Partnership Project translation workshop sponsored in part by The Seed Company. He worked with a different language group this time—the Ruuli. During the last two workshops, he worked with the Ma’di North translators, but this time someone who has had many years experience working with a closely related language came and began working with them. The new group (for Neil) was a good group to work with. Neil also helped out with another group, the Rufumbira, when the consultant working with them had to return home because her husband’s mother died. Neil helped with checking a chapter and a half of Luke, to help get the Crucifixion and Resurrection story ready for further testing.

Each of the teams in the Uganda LPP has a computer and this time the computer staff helped get Skype set up on all the computers. This lets the consultants keep in touch with the translation teams and to even consult with them over the internet. I have talked with one member of the Ruuli team a couple of time through Skype since I came home. This capability will be quite useful in the future. (This is the same technology that lets me work with Sarah, even though she is two days drive from us.)

While in Uganda, Neil did a little work, as he had time to, on the language he normally works on with Sarah. He worked on getting the rough draft of Philippians ready for a preliminary check for correct spelling and words with Sarah one he got back home. He had three chapters ready to go over with Sarah by the time he returned on January 26, and they have completed two chapters, and are working on the third. The final chapter of Philippians has not been keyboarded yet.

I had planned to finish the instructions for editing the dictionary for Dot while in Uganda, but there was plenty to do there. I plan to finish it this month (February).

Plans

1. Finish the editing instructions for Dot’s dictionary
2. Finish the preliminary spelling check of Philippians, and return to the exegetical check of Mark
3. Get two other books that Sarah has in rough draft onto the computer and begin getting them ready for preliminary spelling checking with Sarah
